This may be the MOTHER OF ALL DIODE LASERS! These are rated at 35 WATTs CW maximum output power (50 W CDRH rating). The rectangular beam focuses to a line approximately 1.5 cm wide about 15 cm (6 inches) from the output window. Anything placed at that location is likely to glow orange-yellow hot, melt, smoke profusely, or burst into flames. An additional cylindrical lens can be used to reduce the beam width. A constant current power supply rated up to 65 A at 2 V is required to drive these diodes. The threshold current is around 18 A with 20 W of output reached at 35 to 45 AMPs depending on the specific unit. 35 W will be achieved at between 50 and 65 AMPs.
The precise wavelength has not been measured for this particular diode. While the platesetters typically spec 830 nm, an identical LIMO diode laser was tested and had a center wavelength of 802 nm and spectral width of about 3 nm when run at 20 A. Temperature tuning to 808 nm may be possible. If so, this could be useful for sidepumping of a small YAG rod, or with an additional lens, a vanadate crystal.
Each BIG DIODE has been tested by Sam Goldwasser *************************** and labeled for output power at around 45 A. (Additional information on these lasers can be found at [long word]
