Described below are specific capabilities of the main system components:

At the heart of the cryogenic production system are two helium liquifiers/refrigerator cold boxes having respective capabilities of 110 and 24 liters of liquid helium per hour. The 110 liter per hour production is distributed from a 1500 liter liquid helium storage dewar containing two withdraw bayonnets with flow controlled by electrically actuated extended-stem valves. The 24 liter per hour system contains a 250 liter storage dewar. To minimize helium gas loss, a 25 horsepower recovery compressor is incorporated into the cryogenic system to capture helium boiloff from the helium dewar and cryostats. The boiloff is stored in three 20,000 ft3 tanks for reuse.
Within the superfluid helium system are three vacuum pumps -- each rated at 2350 cubic feet per minute -- that produce 1.8 degree Kelvin liquid helium by reducing the heat exchanger?s helium vapor pressure to under 0.016 atmospheres. Indirect cooling through the heat exchanger permits independent control of the temperature and pressure of the superfluid helium in the test volume. HARC has achieved temperatures as low as 1.2 degrees Kelvin at 1 atmosphere in existing test fixtures. The short term peak capacity of the superfluid system is 140 watts, with a continuous capacity of 76 watts.
Vacuum pumping equipment supports cryogenic operations by minimizing convection heat loads. This equipment includes two-stage mechanical pumps, root blowers, a diffusion pump, turbomolecular pumps, and cryopumps. Turbomolecular pumps reach a pumping speed ranging from 60 liters per second to 2,200 liters per second. Two mass spectrometer leak detectors support vacuum leak testing.
A deionized (DI) water system cools high-current power supplies, electrical buse, and flexible leads. The DI system is capable of supplying up to 180 GPM of 8.0 mega Ohm ambient temperature cooling water.
