The US Government ordered this Headstock built for boring and turning large gun barrels After construction and acceptance testing, the program was cancelled and the headstock remained un-used. It is currently stored in N.Y.
One key features of this headstock has is it is CNC Milling Capable. See attached HEADSTOCK.pdf file for design details.
The Headstock is rated 250 hp., 65 rpm, 120 inch swing over ways-3M, 80 inch swing over carriage-2.03M, 118 inch front 8 jaw FP chuck, 80 inch rear 4 jaw FP chuck-2.03M. 60 ton unsupported weight capacity. 30 inch spindle hole-762mm. CNC milling capable. Large specialized boring bar and internal grinding spindle and/or stead rests are available.
I was only able to purchase the headstock alone but have since bought the exact same Niles Gun Boring lathe that this headstock was designed to fit a. I will send photos of the Niles lathe in a separate message.

The attached photos show the Niles Boring Lathe in stages of disassembly. The Niles Headstock has been sold. The components depicted here are two bed sections, one boring bed section, one boring tailstock, carriage and leadscrew.
